Being a therapist of color is a unique experience. Acknowledging this difference is not meant to create division, but to recognize diversity and validate the challenges we encounter.
Therapists of color have to overcome multiple hurdles in the mental health industry, from colonialism to systemic racism, and that’s just the beginning.
Our experience of these oppressive systems shapes our experience as therapists.
We’ve been conditioned to believe that, in order to succeed, we must:
work twice as hard
accommodate everyone at all times
conform to society’s standards
Coaches who haven’t lived this reality may overlook the nuances of supporting a therapist of color and their business.
Being supported by people who look like us and understand what we have gone through can be a healing experience.
Seeing successful therapists of color in coaching roles challenges the preconceived notions and limiting beliefs in this field. Coaches of color are living proof of breaking stereotypes and biases, and they create a more inclusive representation of leadership and expertise.
For therapists of color, this fosters a sense of community, support, and belonging.
When we see coaches who share our identity succeeding in this industry, our own success feels more attainable.
Here are some things I want you to remember:
Despite the history of colonization and oppression that lives in our DNA, we cannot continue to accept less from others.
It’s a complete misconception that all BIPOC clients can’t afford therapy at higher fees. Yes, it’s true that some can’t, but those who can will be happy to pay those fees to work with someone who really gets it.
Charging higher fees to those who can afford it allows you to offer low/no-cost services to those who can’t. You can be accessible in a more balanced way and feel more financially secure.
BIPOC therapists and coaches, you bring such value to our industry. Know that you are seen, supported, and appreciated. By challenging old belief systems and creating more representation for our community in this field…
And, for those who don’t identify as BIPOC, thank YOU for helping create awareness about the stereotypes and biases in our industry.
