It’s time to address the elephant in the room:
Do you ever feel like you’re playing pretend as a therapist… questioning yourself and your abilities?
Those questions that run through your head:
“Who the heck said I can do this unsupervised?”
“Can I actually help this person?”
“Do I really know anything about helping people move through the depths of their pain?”
Or, maybe you’re playing the comparison game and have convinced yourself that you’ll never be as good as that therapist.
I see you, and I’m here to tell you that you’re definitely not alone; imposter syndrome is more common than you might think.
But, that doesn’t mean you ARE an imposter!
You went to YEARS of schooling and practicum to learn how to be a therapist. You’ve helped probably hundreds of clients.
So, where does this negative self-talk come from?!
Ultimately, it’s rooted in the limiting beliefs we have about ourselves, our abilities, and our worth. These beliefs can lead to burnout really quickly.
Working through imposter syndrome is CRUCIAL for a thriving and sustainable practice.
Here’s why:
1) Your well-being is your client’s well-being. If you can show up fully, as your best self, your clients are going to receive the high-quality care that they deserve.
2) It’s important to protect your mental health. Tackling imposter syndrome now can shield you from creating emotional damage that will eventually lead to burnout.
3) Overcoming your limiting beliefs can actually boost your professional growth. When you believe in yourself and your abilities, you’re more likely to engage in new opportunities and professional advancement.
4) When you don’t feel like you have to prove yourself, you’re better able to set boundaries and prioritize self-care without experiencing guilt or fear of judgment.
5) Confronting your imposter syndrome will increase your authentic confidence, and consequently, your clients’ confidence in you! When clients fully trust your ability to help them, they’re going to have more success on their healing journey.
6) Increased confidence and self-assurance lends itself to increased resilience. When things don’t go as planned, you can bounce back quickly and trust in your ability to be successful.
Getting yourself into therapy (if you’re not already) is an obvious choice. A lot of our limiting beliefs are rooted in early childhood or trauma-based events.
